2 questions

ok so im sorta new at this. ive had a guitar for a while but i just sat round strumming it. never really playing it good. I am currently a drummer but my friend in band class needs a guitarist/vocalist and he new i had a guitar so i was put into the band. now i come to my questions. the current strings on my guitar are really thin, my friend suggests i get ernie balll beefy slinky because we play alot of the devil wears prada and such. i also want a new amp cuz the one i have is very bad. i was lookin at a fender frontman 212. does anyone have knowledge of these and if so please tell me some pros and cons. thanks
